GPS Seminar Series

The Global Program on Sustainability (GPS) Seminar Series shares the latest knowledge on how policy makers and the financial sector can integrate environmental sustainability considerations into decision making. Knowledge sharing and learning are central to GPS' goals, and these virtual sessions present an opportunity to highlight real-life case-studies, ongoing work and lessons learned from countries that are beginning to look beyond GDP and traditional financial metrics to account for environmental risks and opportunities.

  • Natural Capital Accounting in Ghana: Informing Policy and Management

Natural capital is Ghana's third largest wealth source, making up 19% of total comprehensive wealth with a depletion rate of 30% of Gross National Savings (World Bank - GPS and Government of Ghana 2023). The Ghana Natural Capital Accounting (G-NCA) Program, funded by the Global Program on Sustainability (GPS), has supported the Government of Ghana in developing accounts for land, ecosystem extent, and ecosystem services. Additionally, Ghana's piloted Wealth and Adjusted Macroeconomic indicators, produced under the G-NCA Program provides a nuanced assessment of economic indicators and their sustainability. As the program ends after 3 years, this seminar will feature presentations from the Government of Ghana on the main outputs of the NCA program and their applications, as well as lessons learned from producing natural capital accounts to support evidence-based natural resource management and development planning in Ghana.
